The event is to raise funds for the officially registered Hong Kong charity PROJECT VISION to provide self-sustaining eye services and perform cataract surgeries in remote areas in rural China. Woo Zun Hin received his B.M. in violin performance studying under Michael Ma at the University of Oklahoma and pursued a Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Columbia under the guidance of Edward Dolbashian. Mr. Woo has been a violinist with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for six years and has been the conductor of the Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra since 2002. 胡俊顯於美國奧克拉荷馬州大學在馬忠為教授的指導下取得小提琴演奏學位，繼在美蘇里哥倫比亞大學研習指揮，師承名家愛德華都伯生，取得交響樂指揮碩士。胡俊顯曾任香港小交響樂團小提琴手達六年，自２００２年起，胡俊顯任職香港醫學會管弦樂團指揮，為慈善機構籌得的善款數以百萬計，他與香港醫學會管弦樂團的精彩演出，曾於電視及香港電台直播。

Conductor: Ching-Hong KAO 指揮: 高錦弘醫師

高錦弘醫師畢業於台北醫學大學醫學系，在長庚紀念醫院眼科部完成眼科專科訓練，並專攻眼部整形及重建手術。高醫師亦畢業於東吳大學音樂系研究所，取得碩士學位，主修管絃樂指揮，為台灣醫聲室內樂團(1990-)及台北市民交響樂團(1999-)創辦人之一。高醫師經常參與室內樂、交響樂，及管樂團的演出，演奏過的樂器包括小提琴、中提琴、大提琴、上低音號，以及長號；目前在台北地區經營兩家眼科診所。 Dr. Ching-Hong Kao graduated from Taipei Medical University and completed his residency and subspecialty training in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to become an ophthalmologist, specialized at ocular plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Kao also graduated from the Music department of Soochow University in Taipei with a master degree on orchestral conducting. Dr. Kao is the co-founder of the Physicians Chamber Orchestra of Taiwan and is the Executive Director of PCOT (since 1990) and the Taipei Civic Symphony Orchestra (since 1999). Besides conducting, Dr. Kao had played violin, viola, cello, euphonium, and trombone in chamber music, orchestra and symphonic band. Now he also runs two eye clinics in Taipei area.

Physicians Chamber Orchestra of Taiwan 台灣醫聲室內樂團

團長: 張智欽醫師 Concertmaster: Dr. Kim Chang台灣醫聲室內樂團於1990年由一群喜好音樂並熱衷演奏的醫療工作者在台北成立。多年來，醫聲室內樂團在台北的國家音樂廳每季所推出的慈善音樂會『音樂 - 愛 - 生命』系列引起社會各界極大的迴響，志願加入的愛樂者與音樂家們越來越多，不得不在1999年另外成立一個『台北市民交響樂團』加以吸納。醫聲室內樂團曾多次出國巡迴演出，包括1995年澳洲，1997年新西蘭，以及2001年的法國。台灣醫聲室內樂團非常榮幸能受邀參與香港醫學會管絃樂團二十週年慶的活動與演出，在此預祝音樂會成功，並歡迎所有團員及嘉賓明年秋天到台北來，分享台灣醫聲室內樂團也是二十週年慶音樂會的喜悅。 In 1990, a group of physicians and health care professionals in Taipei began the ‘Physicians Chamber Orchestra of Taiwan’. For so many years, their regular charity concerts, the ‘Music - Love - Life’ series in the National Concert Hall of Taipei, had gained national acclaim. In 1999, PCOT could not but give birth of the Taipei Civic Symphony Orchestra to accommodate the huge numbers of friends and musicians around them. Overseas concert tours include Australia in 1995, New Zealand in 1997, and France in 2001. PCOT is honored being invited to the activity of the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong Medial Association Orchestra. All of you are welcome to Taipei next year, for PCOT’s 20th Anniversary.

Violin Soloist: Dr. Kim Chang 小提琴獨奏: 張智欽醫師

張智欽醫師，台北縣立醫院牙科主任卸職，現任牙科主治醫師。八歲開始習琴，於1976年及1985年兩度奪得到台灣音樂比賽小提琴冠軍，1979年得到室內樂比賽首獎。張醫師除了牙科事業有所成就之外在音樂圈更是活耀，多次與不同的管絃樂團合作演出協奏曲，也多次與傑出的音樂家合作室內樂演出。張醫師於2001年舉辦個人第一次獨奏會"音樂無界I"到今年2009年已經舉辦了七場。張醫師除了是"醫聲室內樂團"的共同創辦人與團長之外也是"市民交響樂團"的共同創辦人及樂團首席。 Dr. Kim Chang, visiting staff of Dental Department, Taipei County Hospital, past chief of Dental Department, began his violin studies at age 8, has won 1st prize twice in 1976 & 1985 for violin performing of Taiwan Music Competition, also 1st prize of chamber music in 1979. Dr. Chang keeps his dental business and music activities in a perfect balance; he has worked with different symphony orchestras for concerto performing, also performed with outstanding musicians for chamber music. Dr. Chang gave his first recital “Music without Boundaries I” in 2001 which goes to VII now in 2009. Dr. Chang is the co-founder and the group leader of Physicians Chamber Orchestra of Taiwan, also the co-founder and concert master of Taipei Civic Symphony Orchestra.

Violin Soloist: Dr. Calvin Lee 小提琴獨奏: 李茗樵醫生

來自美國的李茗樵醫生七歲在紐約跟隨Mary Canberg學習小提琴，獲哈佛大學收錄，並在布朗大學取得腦神經科學及醫學博士學位。在布朗大學時，李茗樵已是大學管弦樂團的團長，並嬴得協奏曲比賽冠軍。最近李茗樵醫生加入YouTube Symphony，與名指標家Michael Tilson Thomas合作。李茗樵醫生是外科醫生，與任職整形外科醫生的太太Dr. Tammy Wu一起工作。請參閱他的私人網站 http://www.CalvinLeeViolin.com。 Dr. Calvin Lee , MD (USA) began his violin studies began at age 7 in New York with his teacher Mary Canberg. He was accepted to Harvard University. He obtained his neuroscience and medical degree from Brown University. While at Brown University, he was concertmaster of the University Symphony and won the concerto competition. Recently he participated in the YouTube Symphony under the direction of famed conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. Violin Soloist: Dr. Wenni Xie 小提琴獨奏: 謝雯霓醫師

謝雯霓醫師七歲開始學習拉小提琴，中學和大學時代，她在汕頭市金鳳交響樂團演奏第一小提琴聲部，曾到過香港、北京、西班牙的Murcia、新加坡、日本的岸和田市和神戶等國內外多個城市表演。謝醫師在汕頭大學醫學院取得臨床醫學學位後，前往英國倫敦大學King’s College London學習，取得營養學碩士學位，目前她在汕頭大學醫學院第一附屬醫院從事內科醫師和營養醫師工作。 Dr. Wenni Xie started learning to play the violin at the age of 7. During her high school and college years, she played the first violin in the Shantou Golden Phoenix Orchestra and performed in many cities in China and overseas, such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Murcia in Spain, Kishiwada and Kobe in Japan and Singapore. Wenni has a BSc in Clinical Medicine from the Medical College of Shantou University, and obtained a MSc in Nutrition from King’s College London in the UK. She currently works in the hospital as a physician and dietitian.

Tenor: Oliver Lo 男高音: 盧思彥

盧思彥以優異成績畢業於香港演藝學院，之後在美國伊斯曼音樂學院獲得獎學金，成為首位取得聲樂演奏博士學位的香港生中國人。自2005年起，盧教授全職任教於香港科技大學人文社會科學學院。他也曾為美國東田納西州州立大學終身聲樂副教授及歌劇團總監。他演出過的歌劇角色包括《愛情靈藥》的涅慕里諾、及《羅密歐與茱麗葉》的羅密歐等。 After graduating from The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts with distinction, Oliver Lo received scholarships to study at the Eastman School of Music, where he became one of the first Hong-Kong-Born Chinese to receive a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance. Prof Lo has been a full-time teaching staff at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology since 2005, and is currently holding the post of Adjunct Associate Professor in Humanities. He was also tenured Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera Theatre at East Tennessee State University in USA. Some of his operatic roles include Basilio and Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro, Jacquino in Fidelio, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, and Roméo in Roméo et Juliet.

Conductor: Woo Zun Hin 指揮: 胡俊顯

Woo Zun Hin was born and raised in the United States. He received his B.M. in violin performance studying under Michael Ma at the University of Oklahoma. He later went to pursue a Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Missouri-Columbia under the guidance of Edward Dolbashian. During this time, he co-founded the MU Chamber Soloists, served as assistant conductor of the Columbia Civic Orchestra for three years as well as the assistant conductor for the Show Me Opera. He also participated in the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors for two summers in Maine. Mr. Woo has been a violinist with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta for six years. In July 2003, he recorded the soundtrack for the movie Heroic Duo with the Shen Zhen Symphony. He has been the conductor of the Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra since 2002. His performances with them have been broadcast live on TV and RTHK helping to raise millions for several charitable organizations over the years. With a wide range of experience from Baroque to contemporary and pop music, he has worked with international musicians such as Grammy Award nominee Howard McCrary, Joanna Ampil, Robert Vincenzio, and Hee-Ah Lee the famous "four fingered pianist." Woo has also collaborated with the Songsingers Choir and the Danse a Lili Ballet Academie. He is currently the conductor of the orchestras at both Wah Yan Colleges and King's College. In 2007 Woo has been regularly conducting the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra and most recently conducted the Grandmaster Orchestra accompanying 5 soloists in the final round for the 2007 Fourth Chinese Works Piano Competition. In June 2009, he conducted a full performance of Johann Strauss Junior’s operetta “Die Fledermaus” in Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

胡俊顯於美國奧克拉荷馬州大學在馬忠為教授的指導下取得小提琴演奏學位，繼在美蘇里哥倫比亞大學研習指揮，師承名家愛德華都伯生，取得交響樂指揮碩士。在美國期間，與同儕創立了美蘇里獨奏家室樂團，任職哥倫比亞人民管弦樂團副指揮，經常在當地演出歌劇及舞台劇，曾兩度獲選加入緬因州的指揮訓練學校 Pierre Monteux School for Conductors，深造指揮藝術。胡俊顯曾任香港小交響樂團小提琴手達六年，亦兼任九龍華仁書院及英皇書院的樂隊指揮，曾於二零零三年與深圳交響樂團灌錄電影<<雙雄>>的原聲唱片。自２００２年起，胡俊顯任職香港醫學會管弦樂團指揮，為慈善機構籌得的善款數以百萬計，他與香港醫學會管弦樂團的精彩演出，曾於電視及香港電台直播。胡氏的演出經驗及音樂領域遼闊，對巴洛克時期至流行音樂都極具心得，和他合作過的音樂家包括格林美獎得主Howard McCrary，音樂劇歌唱家Joanna Ampil及Robert Vincenzio和著名的韓國四指鋼琴家李喜雅小姐。胡俊顯亦常和本地其他藝術團體如歌者合唱團和曾雪麗芭蕾舞團等合作，在２００７年經常指揮香港室樂團，最近亦曾指揮藝韻交響樂團，在２００７年第四屆中國作品鋼琴比賽中為五名鋼琴獨奏家伴奏。２００９年六月，他在香港文化中心大劇院指揮小約翰‧史特勞斯的輕歌劇「蝙蝠之謎」，大受觀眾歡迎。

Violin Solo: Faith Lee 小提琴獨奏：李明懿

Faith Lee李明懿
現年十歲，就讀瑪利曼小學四年級。父親李國東醫生，現為私人執業放射診斷科專科醫生。明懿五歲起隨李永純老師學習小提琴，獲益良多，並己考獲英國皇家音樂學院小提琴八級証書。在過去數年香港校際音樂節小提琴獨奏組和弦樂協奏曲組(12歲以下) 比賽中均獲三甲。現為香港兒童交響樂團成員及瑪利曼小學交響樂團副首席。

Faith Lee is 10 years of age, and a Primary 4 student at the Marymount Primary School (MPS). Her father, Dr. Rayson Lee Kwok Tung, is a specialist radiologist in private practice. Faith started her violin training at the age of five under Mr. Lee Wing Shun, and has received Grade 8 Violin Certificate of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
At competitions of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, Faith won the First and Third Prizes in the Violin Solo and Violin Concerto (Age 12 and under) groups in 2008. A year later, she won the Second and Third Prizes in the same competition groups. Her talent is recognised by the renowned Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra (HKCSO). She is currently the Associated Concertmaster of the MPS Orchestra. Faith

Concert Report- Dr. Charles Wong

2008 Annual HKMA Orchestra Concert Raised Over $430,000 for Charity

The exhilarating “Olympic Spirit” composed by John Williams (whose other popular works include scores for Star Wars, and Schindler’s List) kick started this magnificent concert. Adding to the glorious, uplifting sound of trumpets was our own Dr. Timothy LAI. Our other trumpeter Dr. LAM Ying-ming took a break from performance, but contributed his support handsomely nonetheless. Thank you Dr. LAM. Orchestra members themselves also helped generously towards the cost of the concert. Donations received before the concert have already been handed over to Grace Charity Foundation designated to help with construction of health centres in remote regions of rural China.

Decades ago, we oldies were proud of and fascinated by Fu Ts'ong, China’s first internationally acclaimed pianist who frequently played with the likes of Menuhin and Barenboim. After a generation lapse, recently hailed from China, we have world class pianists LI Yundi, an exponent of Liszt and Chopin, and LANG Lang (China trained then studied further at the Curtis of USA).

What about a really home grown virtuoso pianist from Hong Kong? In the shape of one Stephen HUNG, we now have a home grown budding young pianist, at least nearly all home grown until he starts at the Royal Academy of Music, London later on this year. For the past two years, Stephen had been attending Harrow School in London where he was recipient of a music scholarship, and was regarded as one of the most inspiring musicians. Stephen was concertmaster at Wah Yan College Kowloon when he became acquainted with our Music Director Maestro WOO Zun-hin. In case of doubt, “concertmaster” is head of the first violin section, leader of the orchestra whose authority is next to the conductor.

When Maestro WOO initially approached Stephen about performing at our annual July concert, the talented youngster could not even decide whether to perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto or a piano concerto. On hearing this, orchestra members were initially skeptical, that any one can ever be capable of commanding two technically challenging master pieces on two completely different instruments, one on the violin and the other on the piano. With this concert, Stephen has now proved himself to us at least on the piano.

Over the past two decades, the HKMA Orchestra (HKMAO) has had the pleasure of co-operating with quite of number of excellent, mature soloist musicians. On this performance, many of us actually felt it was our honour to have accompanied Stephen on his brilliant performance of the whole of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3. We doctor musicians were jealous and overwhelmed by admiration of this marvelous interpretation of a great piece of music by such a very young pianist. Our violinist, Dr. Alex FAN, described the piano performance “…….astounding control of tone, timing and dynamics … Stephen was in love with what he was playing”.

HKMAO is proud to point out that Stephen is from a medical family. His brother Geoffrey, who was leader of the cello section at Wah Yan College Kowloon, now reading engineering at Cambridge, also played in this concert. This participation is exactly what the HKMAO has long championed for, preferring doctors or their family to play together in the HKMA orchestra, and perform as our soloist provided the very high standard demanded is met. In the past, HKMAO held an annual "family concert" for general performance by doctors, their families and friends. These were fraternity gatherings, not designed as show case of excellence as per this occasion. Should funding allow in the future, HKMAO may be able to restart this tradition.

The second half of the concert was filled with bel canto singing from Dr. David FANG and friends of the HKMAO. The whole of the concert can be heard over the Internet from http://www.wongsworld.org/music/index.htm#PA.

The skill and effort demanded to render such a successful concert of this magnitude is immense, particularly when no hired staff was at hand. The musical success of this concert is the result of hard work by members of the HKMAO and friends. The event’s seamlessly smooth run down, detail administration, artwork of its posters, programme book design, write up, collation of data, and endless number of tasks major and minor, were done personally by our cellist Dr. Anthony NG Wing-keung. Thank you Anthony. Not only did he do the hard work hands on, he also organised teams of helpers from in and out of the HKMAO who took on the concert stage management conscientiously. Thank you every one.

Addendum: HKMA members and medical students are welcomed to join the HKMA Orchestra without audition. Non HKMA members with high standard of playing are also welcomed. HKMAO continues to be available in various sizes and combinations to perform at public or private functions. Such honorarium received by doctor members is donated to the HKMAO to assist running cost.
