Bizet's “Carmen” was not well received in its premiere, denounced as immoral and musically difficult by critics. It has since become one of the most popular works in the entire operatic repertoire. Entr’acte is the French word for music that takes place between acts. In “Habanera”, Carmen, a gypsy factory girl, tells a crowd that love obeys no known laws. She is calling for the attention of Don José, the protagonist. “Les tringles des sistres tintaient” is also called the “Gypsy Song”, painting the scene of gypsy girls dancing in a tavern.
